Thoughtful Foods is a volunteer run, not-for-profit food cooperative which is owned, managed and run according to the wishes of its members. We organise in a non-hierarchical, participatory manner using consensus decision-making processes.
Our aim is to provide minimally-packaged and ethically-produced affordable wholefoods and household products to UNSW students, staff and the local community. We try to supply ethically, socially and environmentally sound products. Unlike supermarkets, we have a concern for who produces the goods, under what conditions and by what methods.
Most of our products are unpackaged and bought in bulk, so we price them by kilo or 100g. You bring along your own containers and scoop or pour out exactly the amount you want, weigh it and price it yourself. Neither you nor the environment pays for unnecessary packaging.
The beauty of Thoughtful Foods is that the more involved you are, the cheaper the goods are. While you don’t have to be a member of Thoughtful Foods to shop there, members get a 10% discount on shop items. Members also have the chance to volunteer leading to a 30% discount. Members can also order pre-paid bread and organic fruit and vegetable boxes, both of which are delivered weekly on Thursdays. More details in a flyer here.
